Evolution Markets has facilitated the purchase and retirement of carbon credits making the United Nation’s pavilion at the Shanghai 2010 World EXPO carbon neutral. The credits offset the UN’s estimated 3,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions that resulted from the operation of its 3,000 square meter Shanghai EXPO pavilion.
Credits were derived from a run-of-river hydropower project in Turkey and issued by the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS). The credits were ultimately retired on the APX VCS carbon credit registry. Evolution Markets’ Beijing-based carbon team facilitated the transaction in conjunction with the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange.
This transaction marks one of the first major announcements of carbon neutrality at the Chinese-hosted world exposition.
